Homeschool Curriculum Review: Homeschool+ Adaptive Math, Reading & More

I was paid a wee bit to write this review, but just like with all things from The WOLFe Pack, what you will find here is an honest opinion from a seasoned homeschool mom with a Master’s Degree in Education and a decade of experience in the classroom…who also happens to be a mom with way too little sleep, too much chub and only 18 months left on her homeschool clock.

Your Homeschool, Your Way

Let me start off by saying that I agree with their tagline so strongly that I might as well be shouting it from the rooftops of the host hotels at all of the homeschool conventions…which I nearly did this past weekend.

While working the Great Homeschool Convention in Missouri {as the Customer Success Manager for Nicole the Math Lady,} I cannot tell you how many times I said words to the effect of

“You need to homeschool the way it works best for you.”
“It’s up to YOU how YOU homeschool.”
“The best part of homeschooling is that you get to design it exactly how it works best for you and your kids.”
“No two homeschools are the same.”
“Your homeschool doesn’t need to look like her homeschool or her homeschool or her homeschool. It needs to only look like your homeschool.”
“If we wanted to fit our homeschool kids into neat little boxes, we might as well just put them in public school.”

Or as Homeschool+ puts it, “Your Homeschool, Your Way.”

And, truly, that is what homeschool should be. Whether you are brand new to this lovely homeschool world or you’re a veteran player to the crazy game, you need to know that.

It’s YOUR homeschool and it should be done YOUR way!

So, with that in mind, let’s look at Homeschool+ and see if it can help you do “Your Homeschool, Your Way.”

WHAT IS HOMESCHOOL+?

Short Answer: An online option with offline features!

Longer Answer: Homeschool+ is an online curriculum that is available on computers, tablets and smartphones. It covers math and reading but also science, art and social studies. It also includes an offline feature that helps the parent bring the curriculum back to the real world setting with ready-to-use lesson plans that spread across all of the subjects. To me, it’s the perfect blend of allowing your student some independence while giving you the tools to implement some hands-on experiences as well. Too many times new homeschool parents feel overwhelmed with all. the. things. All of the things they need to gather. All of the things they need to buy. All of the things they need to pin, print and laminate. Let alone all of the things they need to create and document and grade. With the offline feature from Homeschool+, you just need to pick and choose from the included lesson plans and then implement the simple, yet meaningful offline options.

FOR WHOM WAS HOMESCHOOL+ DESIGNED?

Short Answer: Ages 4-8; Grades Pre K-2nd

Longer Answer: Anybody who needs to work on math or reading skills which tend to fall in the beginning/basic stages. My son LOVED all things literacy at age 3. Did I want him spending hours on a tablet? No. Would I have allowed him some time on an iPad to play around with some fun reading games? Sure! On the flip side. If I had a third or fourth-grade student who was struggling with reading or showing math gaps, I would not hesitate to sign them up for Homeschool+ as a supplementary option.

WHAT KIND OF HOMESCHOOL MOM CAN BENEFIT FROM HOMESCHOOL+?

Short Answer: Almost any type!

Longer Answer:

have multiple kids of different ages and skill levels.
are new and unsure of where to start.
are seasoned but have a need to “outsource” a bit to save time.
feel a little uncertain about teaching reading in the early years.

HOW EASY IS IT TO SET UP AND USE HOMESCHOOL+?

Short Answer: Very easy!

Longer Answer: There is a Lesson Planner which is like the parent hub to plan and customize everything. It’s very easy to click things on and off, set time amounts and make other adjustments. It’s also very simple from the student’s side to access daily lessons, complete the work, move from one activity to the next, etc. I also really like the fact that students cannot accidentally access the parent’s side of things without the password.

WHAT IS COVERED BY HOMESCHOOL+?

Short Answer: Math, Reading, Art, Science, Social Studies, Spanish

Longer Answer: Two things that I want to highlight.

The adaptive feature. As any good teacher knows, differentiation is the name of the game. Unfortunately, classroom teachers really don’t have the luxury of differentiating lessons for each individual student and oftentimes, homeschool moms don’t have the confidence to stray far from the lesson plans included in their boxed curriculum. But, with Homeschool+, there is a built-in feature that takes care of that for you! As the student begins work, the system assesses his/her level and adapts future lessons accordingly. The best part is that the student does not even know he/she is being assessed!
The offline feature. Let’s face it, there are a lot of online educational sites out there. But Homeschool+ sets itself far apart from the pack with its variety of offline activities. And it’s easy to tell that these are not just “any” activities pulled from Pinterest or found on free blogs. 🙂 These are high-quality, cross-curricular activities that would result in several well-rounded, fully-fleshed-out studies on several subjects. And it would be easy to tweak the offline activities to include other kids as well.
