I was paid a wee bit to write this review, but just like with all things from The WOLFe Pack, what you will find here is an honest opinion from a seasoned homeschool mom with a Master’s Degree in Education and a decade of experience in the classroom…who also happens to be a mom with way too much to do, not enough sleep, and only 18 months left on her homeschool clock {which is to say that I do not waste my time on bad curriculum, pointless resources or dubious suggestions nor will I waste your time either!}

Spanish Grammar from Latin Roots
After a disastrous experience with a different Spanish class in the fall, I was on the hunt for some other type of class to complete the year. So, when offered the opportunity to check out a class from Compass Classroom in exchange for a review, I jumped at the chance to sign my son up for Spanish Grammar from Latin Roots.
Why did I JUMP at the chance, as opposed to dilly dallying my way through deciding if this would be a good fit? Considering we had just experienced a disaster of a foreign language class, that’s a fair question.
But the answer is simple. I knew he would love the class and learn a ton.
You see, my son has taken two other courses with Dwane Thomas through Compass Classroom {Word Up Vocabulary and Visual Latin} and LOVED them. Like….he truly loved the classes, actually enjoyed the work and thoroughly benefitted from the content and style.
Dwane Thomas is
- highly intelligent, but not grandiose
- clear and concise
- interesting and inspirational
- funny in a clever, dry-witted way

HOW DOES SPANISH GRAMMAR FROM LATIN ROOTS HELP STUDENTS LEARN SPANISH?
Short Answer: According to Dwane, “Spanish is 90% Latin.”
Longer Answer: According to David, my son, “Dwane teaches us more than just how to conjugate verbs. He also teaches us about the roots and history of the language which I find not only interesting, but also helpful. Plus, he’s funny but does not talk to us like we are little kids.”
DOES SPANISH GRAMMAR FROM LATIN ROOTS QUALIFY FOR HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT?
Short Answer: No. As stated on their website, “This course provides an excellent introduction to the structure and grammar of the Spanish language, with particular reference to its origins in Latin. However, it is not recommended for high school credit since it does not provide evaluation in spoken Spanish.”
Longer Answer: It depends. If combined with an opportunity to speak the language, and to have the student’s speaking skill level assessed, I do believe this course would qualify as a .5 credit. For my son, who had a semester of a live Spanish class that met twice per week plus all of the book work associated with that class followed by Spanish Grammar from Latin Roots, I feel very confident in giving him a full credit of foreign language for this year. Then again, I live in a state with very lax laws. So, please, as always, check with your state laws before assigning high school credit.
