Simple and Effective Literacy Activity: WORD FLIPBOOK

WHAT IS A FLIPBOOK?

Not to be confused with an animation or digital flipbook, a printable flipbook is a way for students to record and organize information in a fun and creative way. There are multiple styles of printable flipbooks available that can be created for a wide range of topics. But, today I’ll show you how to make a super simple version that can serve as a cross between a book your kids can read themselves and a dictionary to be referenced for months to come.

WHY IS A WORD FLIPBOOK EFFECTIVE AS A LITERACY ACTIVITY?

This Word Flipbook is an effective literacy activity because it touches on multiple strategies at the same time including

Reading
Writing
Decoding
Rhyming
Defining
Drawing

It will also foster confidence, especially if your student is encouraged to select his/her own words. Additionally, it will provide an opportunity to read these particular words over and over again, whether to him/herself or to a family member, best friend or favorite pet!

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM A WORD FLIPBOOK?

Early and emergent literacy learners will benefit greatly from creating one of these. It provides a constant reminder of patterns, a place to review phonics, a simple personal dictionary to reference and so much more!

HOW SIMPLE IS IT TO MAKE A WORD FLIPBOOK?

So simple! All your student will need is this free WORD FLIPBOOK PRINTABLE, a pencil, a pair of scissors and a stapler. You may also want to provide crayons or markers, but it is not necessary.

Once you have those items gathered, simply follow these directions {You can find these directions in the FREE PRINTABLE too, of course.}

CAN THIS WORD FLIPBOOK BE MODIFIED?

Absolutely! Included in the FREE PRINTABLE, is also a blank template so you can modify it however you want. Just print it out, write in your own questions, make the necessary copies, and let your students get to work! Spelling words, synonyms, antonyms, word families, poetic devices, book reports and more!
