This post is part of a series of FREE Simple and Effective Literacy Activities. To read more about my personal philosophy on how to help teach a love of all things literacy, head here.

WHAT IS A SENTENCE PUZZLE?

A Sentence Puzzle is simply a puzzle divided into two distinctly different parts of a simple sentence: the subject and predicate.

WHY ARE SENTENCE PUZZLES EFFECTIVE AS A LITERACY ACTIVITY?

Sentence Puzzles are an effective LITERACY ACTIVITY because they provide direct focus to the distinct parts of simple sentences. They naturally provide practice in reading complete sentences and also open up simple questions such as “what is cold” and “what color is the dog?” For older students, this activity can also serve as an excellent introduction to parts of speech.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM SENTENCE PUZZLES?

  • Early readers working on fluency
  • Early writers working on simple sentence structure
  • Mid-readers and writers working on parts of speech
  • Hands-on learners
  • Game-players

Though it does take a wee bit of time, making Sentence Puzzles with the SENTENCE PUZZLES PRINTABLE is fairly simple.

In the free PRINTABLE, you’ll find these clear directions along with several puzzles to print and cut out. Super simple!

CAN SENTENCE PUZZLES BE MODIFIED?

ARE THERE ANY PRO TIPS?

Pro Tip 1: As your student progresses, make more complicated sentences that include verbs other than “is”.

Pro Tip 2: Discuss the parts of speech (subject and predicate) as your student works on this activity.

Pro Tip 3: Create puzzles that are specific to your family such as:

  • We are the Smith Family.
  • We live at 123 Main Street.
  • We live in Wonderfulville, MD.
  • There are five people in our family.
  • The youngest person is Becky.
  • We have a dog.
  • My house is red.
  • My dad is a banker.
  • My mom is a nurse.

These not only increase a student’s interest in the activity, they will also encourage use of a bigger variety of words.

Another option is to purchase a pre-created set.
