I was paid a wee bit to write this review, but just like with all things from The WOLFe Pack, what you will find here is an honest opinion from a seasoned homeschool mom with a Master’s Degree in Education and a decade of experience in the classroom…who also happens to be a mom with way too little sleep, too much fluff and only 18 months left on her homeschool clock.

BEAUTIFUL FEET BOOKS: Early American History

When asked to review one of the studies from Beautiful Feet Books, I was super excited about the opportunity. Though I had heard wonderful things about them for years, I had never used any of their curricula from. Out of their several options, I selected their 7th-9th Grade Early American History.

WHO/WHAT IS BEAUTIFUL FEET BOOKS?

Before getting into the specifics of what Beautiful Feet Books has to offer for Early American History 7th-9th, I wanted to do a short intro explaining what/who Beautiful Feet Books is.

Beautiful Feet Books was started in 1984 by Rea Berg, a homeschool mom who wanted to teach her children history without using a dry and lifeless textbook. Inspired in this pursuit by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay’s For the Children’s Sake and the writings of Charlotte Mason, she created a living books approach to the subject of history.

Today, Beautiful Feet Books‘ vision is “To help homeschooling parents ignite wonder and connect with their kids through the best stories and guided lessons.”

To accomplish this vision, they create, develop, and publish history and literature-based homeschool curriculum, unit studies, and teacher’s guides.

You can read my {general} Curriculum Review of Beautiful Feet Books here.

WHAT IS BEAUTIFUL FEET BOOKS: Early American History?

The 7th-9th grade Early American History study by Beautiful Feet Books is a literature-based history curriculum that includes a collection of quality books and a Teacher Guide with assignments, research and creative writing projects, discussion and narration prompts to encourage critical thinking, curated reading lists for digging deeper, character connections, activities and handicrafts, and more.

WHO SHOULD USE BEAUTIFUL FEET BOOKS: Early American History?

This particular study was designed for the Middle School crowd (Grades 7th-9th) and would be a good fit for students who need American History beyond what they learned in the younger years. It would work especially well for students who love to read and/or who need to spend more time diving into literature.

WHO SHOULD NOT USE BEAUTIFUL FEET BOOKS: Early American History?

If you have a student who is very reticent to read, this may not be the best option as this study does involve a lot of reading.

Or if your student appreciates a concrete timeline and a textbook that explains each point on that timeline, this probably won’t be a good fit.

This curriculum also won’t likely work well for a student who prefers to work in a vacuum instead of taking time to partake in discussions with other students, parents or siblings.

HOW LONG DOES BEAUTIFUL FEET BOOKS: Early American History TAKE TO COMPLETE?

Beautiful Feet Books: Early American History for 7th-9th graders has 82 lessons and the site suggests that each lesson takes about 60-90 minutes to complete. The logical pacing would be 2 lessons each week for a “school year”, but, of course it would be easy to speed up/slow down based on your family’s needs.

  • Sojourner Truth: Aint I a Woman? by Patricia and Fredrick McKissack

There is also a map and Teacher Guide included as well.

The Teacher Guide is beautifully done, highly organized and clearly laid-out. It was very easy to follow, left no glaring questions in my mind and made perfect sense to me. My only issue, and it’s a small one (literally, ha ha) is the font size. It’s just a wee bit too small for my old eyeballs, but I am sure most people wouldn’t see that as an issue (another pun, ha!) and would likely appreciate the savings created by not having a huge font and double the amount of pages.

The map measures 2′ x 3′ and is printed on both sides. It is thick, foldable and designed to be marked up throughout the year.

HOW IS BEAUTIFUL FEET BOOKS: Early American History FORMATTED?

The Teacher Guide divides the full study into five parts:

  1. The Indigenous People of North America and First Encounters
  2. The Early Colonial Period: 1607-1706
  3. The Later Colonial Period and French & Indian War: 1706-1776
  4. The Revolutionary War: 1776-1783
  5. The Young United States: 1783-1864

And then each part includes

  • a brief overview
  • handicraft ideas
  • character connections
  • online resources
  • research topics
  • creative writing
  • additional suggested books (called Rabbit Trails)

Plus the most important…

  • step-by-step lesson plans with
    • pages to read from specific books
    • discussion points
    • mapping exercises
    • creative writing prompts
    • and more!

CAN BEAUTIFUL FEET BOOKS: Early American History BE MODIFIED?

Absolutely!

First off, right in the Teacher Guide, it says, “this is a tool, not a taskmaster.”

You do not need to read every book included, complete every activity suggested or follow every link provided.

Isn’t that beauty of homeschooling? We get to teach what we want, when we want and how we want!

So, if you find yourself short on time for the year or you’re just not feeling the need to have your student copy “Pestilence” in his notebook, skip it.

Or, if your teen was thoroughly engrossed in the idea of the Trail of Tears, consider adding another more-mature literacy option after reading Mary and the Trail of Tears.

There are even directions included if you want to expand this Early American History curriculum to include world history.

Not only do we get to teach what we want, when we want and how we want, we also get to teach to whom we want. So, if you want to take this Early American History study that was designed for 7th-9th graders and adapt it to include your younger crew, go for it. Or if you want to beef it up more to build out a full credit for your high schooler, you can do that too. Just be extra cautious when using this material for younger kids. Some of the topics are, of course, pretty intense and you’ll want to be sure you verify that the details in this level of books is appropriate for your students.

HOW MUCH DOES BEAUTIFUL FEET BOOKS: Early American History COST?

As of this publish date, for an entire year of Early American History for your Middle School student, you will pay $228.95. However, you can easily customize your pack to remove titles you already own or plan to borrow from others. If you have an amazing public library or are a savvy eBay shopper, you may even be able to buy all the recommended literature. That would leave you just the Teacher Guide to purchase which you can easily do for less than $30.
