Each UNIT STUDY includes suggestions of books to READ, ideas to WRITE, crafts to CREATE, more to EXPLORE, snacks to ENJOY and other ways to LEARN about a specific topic!

This is part of a series, THE 12 DAYS OF WINTER UNIT STUDIES. For a thorough explanation of UNIT STUDIES {what they are and what they include} check out THE 12 DAYS OF WINTER UNIT STUDIES. You’ll also find a schedule of when each new UNIT PACK will go live!

Day Seven: REINDEER

Another confession from me! Before working on this UNIT STUDY, I had NO IDEA that REINDEER and CARIBOU were the same animals. Seriously, NO CLUE. But, now I do!  I’ll add that to the long list of things I learned along the way while teaching!

REINDEER

READ:  Once again, I have chosen a beautiful book from Jan Brett, The Wild Christmas Reindeer. I just cannot get enough of her lovely and clever ways that she makes the animals real and unreal at the same time. She always manages to keep the animals true to their nature while also allowing them to talk, or in this case, fly.  And her illustrations are always unparalleled. This book provides a sweet little intro to REINDEER and with the FREE mini FICTION BOOK COMPANION PACK, you can be sure your kiddos understand the story.

WRITE: Another super cute fictional REINDEER book is  Olive, The Other Reindeer by Seibold and Walsh. It’s about a dog named Olive who thinks she is the “other”REINDEER. If you don’t know the book, you should. It’s rather funny and clever. Plus, it goes along with this FREE WINTER-THEMED WRITING ACTIVITY.

{Here is my frog REINDEER, Ribber, who looks way more like an alien than a frog. But, hopefully, you get the idea.}

And if you have a paragraph-writer on your hands, there is this version too.

CREATE: As you can imagine, there are gazillion different REINDEER crafts on Pinterest. Apparenlty, you can make REINDEER out of just about anything including toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, pinecones, handprints, candy canes, popsicle sticks, and, of course, just plain old paper.

EXPLORE: If you’re wanting to read about real REINDEER, Reindeer On the Move by Ginjer Clarke is a good place to start. Not only does it go over a lot of kid-sized REINDEER facts, but it also highlights a lot about their migration. And this FREE mini NON-FICTION BOOK COMPANION PACK will help cement some of that REINDEER info.

You may also want to check out the fairly new REINDEER documentary, A Reindeer’s Journey, available on Amazon Prime. It tells the real story of a newborn REINDEER and his journey through the first year of life.

ENJOY:  For a fun, less-educational option, of course, there is the classic TV movie, Rudolph,  the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

While your kids watch the Rudolph movie, be sure to serve up a plate of these Reindeer Cracker Snacks!  Made with round crackers, peanut butter, pretzel twists and a couple of chocolate chips, they are super cute, easy to make and mostly healthy! You can also make them with celery sticks or graham crackers!

LEARN: And to turn your time with Rudolph back into an educational opportunity, check out this RUDOLPH CAROL LITERACY PACK. It’s not listed as free but if you use discount code FREERedNoseWOLFe, it will check out as free!

READ MORE:  Here are some additional REINDEER books you may want to check out…literally, from the library!

Much appreciation goes out to my good friend, Jamie Spear! She helped me find these fun books, crafts, snacks and more! Without her, these UNIT STUDIES would have nothing but “read this, print that, and write something!” You can find her on FaceBook, Instagram and Pinterest.
