For Poetry Month 2021, I reviewed Paint Chip Poetry, which is a unique and fun way to get your kids interested in the colorful world of poetry. To keep the poetic fun going, I have two new poetry games to review: Metaphor Dice and Haikubes. Of these three poetry games, Metaphor Dice is the only one that focuses on understanding and using a specfic poetic device: metaphors. And metaphors are not only important in the world of poetry, they can really dress up any type of writing!

Game Review: METAPHOR DICE {Poetry}

ORGANIZATIONAL COMPONENT: ♥♥♥♥♥ This game consists of 12 dice less than 1 inch in size. There are four red, four white and four blue dice all packed very tightly into my favorite kind of box: small and sturdy. There is a small insert and baggie that help keep the dice in place but if both were ditched, the dice would still be snug and safe. The directions are a tri-fold sheet folded in half so it fits perfectly in the box. ORGANIZATIONAL COMPONENT SCORE: 5/5 ♥♥♥♥♥

FUN FACTOR: ♥♥♥♥__ Metaphor Dice reminds me in some ways of Haikubes. Both can be used less like a game and more like like an educational tool. But, somehow Metaphor Dice comes off as a little more fun. I think perhaps it’s because there are fewer dice to use to create the goal of a metaphor. And, depending on how you choose to use the dice, each player’s turn can be quick which makes for some extra funny ideas. However, it takes a certain kind of creative brain to consider this type of game really fun, though most kids will enjoy it to a dregree. FUN FACTOR SCORE: 4/5 ♥♥♥♥__

EDUCATIONAL VALUE: ♥♥♥♥♥ Whether you are teaching a full-blown poetry unit, just trying to have a little fun for Poetry Month or hoping to improve your students’ writing, Metaphor Dice is a great little option. It simutaneously requires and inspires creativity while also introducing some new vocabulary and gently forcing different connections. The dice do not give you complete sentences, but rather just ideas. The players need to do the rest, which, in my opinion is ideal when it comes to poetry and creative writing. EDUCATIONAL VALUE SCORE: 5/5 ♥♥♥♥♥

CLARITY LEVEL: ♥♥♥♥♥ Because the game is very simple, the directions are very short. But, if you have kids who NEED distinct rules and clear steps, you might want to assist in their understanding of the basic concept. Just like the other two Poetry Games I have reviewed, Haikubes and Paint Chip Poetry, this game is open-ended. There are no right and wrong answers. There are no winners and no losers. Playing Metaphor Dice is not only an exercise in learning how to create a meaningful poetic device, it is also an exercise in patience and flexibility. The directions also explain what a metaphor is and provide tips on how to create and use one. CLARITY LEVEL SCORE: 5/5 ♥♥♥♥♥

OVERALL SCORE: ♥♥♥♥__ If you have students who need to work on poetry making or creative writing, this game could be a fun tool to add to their day. And it’s great for adults too! OVERALL SCORE: 95% ♥♥♥♥__
