Before choosing to homeschool, I was a classroom teacher. And, though, I taught in a variety of schools, states and even countries, I always taught the same grade: First.
As you can imagine, there is a lot to teach in First Grade.
I taught my students math, science and how to tie shoes.
I taught them social studies, penmanship and manners.
In some schools, I even taught PE, art and music.
But of all the things I taught, I spent most of my time, energy and effort teaching LITERACY.
Why focus on LITERACY more than math and science?
Simple.
If a student cannot read or write, math and science will be more than a wee bit difficult to master.
Don’t get me wrong. I taught math and science, along with loads of other subjects and concepts, but LITERACY was the biggest focus and was usually woven into every lesson in the classroom, including math, science and social studies.
And, over time, I accumulated dozens of Simple and Effective Literacy Activities.
Most of these Simple and Effective Literacy Activities were not my original ideas but rather tweaked to work with my own style and my students’ needs.
And, when I started homeschooling, I used the same approach.
I wove LITERACY into nearly everything we did in our homeschool from an early age.
But, as a homeschool mom, I had to adapt what I did in the classroom to make it work at home with one kid.
